This is the worst thing I can say about MirrorMask: It's not perfect. Its pacing is a little off sometimes.
Now can I go back to talking about how good it is? It has a unique visual style, and excellent writing. You don't know what's going to happen next. It's beautiful.
It's playing at the Fox Tower theater (which was sold out). ...Now go! Go this weekend -- and then go again, because there's so much to see. I want to see it again... And we all WANT Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean to make more movies. You're going to own this on DVD eventually. If you have kids, then you're eventually going to buy it to give to them. You will talk about "Labyrinth" and "The Dark Crystal" and "MirrorMask" in the same breath (MirrorMask is probably the best of the three). And -- you can quote me on this:

actually, i think i was the one who said, "i think i liked it better than serenity," as the other very-anticipated movie this year. later, i said, "i liked it better than serenity, but i didn't like it as much as firefly." because let's face it, firefly was -wonderful-. and while i want joss to make more movies so he gets better at making movies, serenity was a 4th-magnitude star in comparison to firefly's 0-magnitude brilliance.
*ahem* but mirrormask succeeds on a lot of levels, and i think it is also worth championing.
Philip and I went to see it on Saturday. We had been looking forward to it for months now, and I was worried that my expectations were too high, but it turned out that my expectations were too *low* if anything! I loved it completely. I can't wait to own it.
(But I wouldn't say that it was better than "Serenity" (another movie that exceeded expectations for me), simply because they are so different that it's silly to compare them!)

i think they're different, but you can still compare them -- and in serenity's case, you can compare it to firefly, which had more to love than serenity did (and not just because it was 14 hours rather than 2). though i may have been hyperbolic when i was comparing apparent magnitudes: i'd up serenity's brightness to a second-magnitude star.
for instance, one of mirrormask's strongest appeals is that it develops a new visual vocabulary, something that isn't true of serenity. -firefly- was better at this, but serenity looks dull & gray, like most sci-fi movies. and the music was a lot better in mirrormask than in either firefly or serenity.

Of course you're right that it's silly to compare them -- at least in a "which one is better" sense. I'm being deliberately silly.
On the other hand, it's fair to compare them in another way: both have fine, intelligent writing. That is, compared to other films, they rise above. ...My friends who enjoyed Serenity -- I want them to go see MirrorMask, too. And while MirrorMask is a geek's film, I'm not sure that it's on everyone's radar. So I want to make a relationship between the two.
When I say "better than Serenity" here, I think the writing is mainly what I'm thinking of. Serenity had very good writing -- but MirrorMask is literature. Serenity, on the other hand, probably has better emotional pacing: it grips my heart, whereas MirrorMask grips my curiosity.
But, as I said before... I'm know that I'm being silly to bother comparing "which one is better". My motive in this discussion is largely geekish delight -- as if I were to ask "who would win in a fight: batman or spiderman?" ..Ya don't bother wondering unless ya kinda love them both.
