I'm rendering out 1 min 56 sec of footage to take a look at. That's 3498 frames. I'm only rendering a half-size output (320x240) -- but still, the computer's estimating that it will take 18 minutes.

About the "lavaman" effect that I'm using... At present count, I have 54 Digital Video clips that need the effect applied. Unfortunately, it's not as simple as creating an "action" in Photoshop, which you can then use for batch processing.

...Nope, every shot needs individual attention. Portions of the screen get masked off, brightness and contrast get tweaked, that composition is imported into a second composition, and then several filters get applied. All told, I count 21 steps required to create the "lavaman" effect to a shot in After Effects -- and that's presuming there aren't pesky shadows to wrestle with.

I know it's 21, because I had to type out the whole process, so I could keep track of what the heck I'm doing at any particular moment.

This afternoon I put together a rough cut of all my DV footage, to get a sense of flow, and find out if there were any glaring problems with the storyboard needing correction (there were). My best guess at this point is that the film is going to be between 8 and 10 minutes long.

Scoring foley sound and music for this thing -- that's going to be a real feat, isn't it...

*waits*

Actual time elapsed for this rendering: 22 min, 20 sec.

...Well, that was a nice little break. :-P
