For all the time spent frantically packing during the week leading up to Burning Man, there is an equal-but-opposite period of UNpacking upon return.

Most of the pressing matters have been dealt with now... Groceries have been bought; the bikes have been cleaned and hung in the garage; Trixie's been reassembled; phone, mail, and email has been checked; Amelia's back home; laundry's been done and food from the coolers put away; the coolers have been cleaned; the garden's been weeded; the digital camera's downloaded.

I think all that's left now is to clean that damned alkaline dust off the shoes I took, my personal toys bag, and the tent floor. Also, I want to look into maybe setting up an online album for the photos. Gentle readers: please suggest solutions to me!

Went out with Leopoldo for brunch at Zell's on Morrison Saturday -- followed by urban exploration of the Big Pipe project, OHSU tram construction, and work being done on the Armory (near Powell's city of books). We were also treated to treats by G at Mio Gelato... Which is a minor miracle in itself, given how it always seems to be closed at the critical moment. Let me hear a big "woo-hoo!": they've got cinnamon gelato, G's fave.

I'm doing work at the Crisis Line again. I'm reorganizing the Development Director's desk. My previous exploration and inventory of the area revealed that it was poorly organized... Monday's work led me to feel that part of the problem is that there isn't enough file space.

You've got two file drawers built into the desk that take legal-size files (difficult to use, since one of the drawers is somewhat broken) -- and one drawer in a file cabinet that takes letter-size files. The file cabinet, which you have to walk around the desk to get to, only has the wire bit for hanging files in the upper part of the cabinet. Good grief! How are you supposed to do fundraising work in a set up like this? I went to Marcia and proposed that we need an actual 4 or 5 drawer file cabinet, right by the desk. She OK'd the proposal... So I went out and bought one myself, at a used office furniture store. Sometimes, rather than try to get an allocation, it's best to just do a thing yourself and consider it a donation.

Today I'm going back in to set up the file cabinet and filing system. I'm really serious about this... Sunday I went to the trouble of reading a whole book on professional filing systems, in preparation for this project. Turns out that I probably won't use much of that info -- better in this case to use something that's going to be intuitive to whoever accesses the file cabinet. ...Still, it's been just amazing to me that the organization has been able to get fundraising done without a centralized, well-ordered file system. Fundraising is, and should be, methodical work.

Yesterday G and I had a "Luxury Tuesday". "Quality Time", if you prefer. We lounged in bed most of the day, catching up in "Poem-A-Day" at long last, and reading through one of my sketchbooks from 1993. We also watched 3 episodes of Angel, and finished off the last of the key lime pie. [Next in the queue: to make peach pie!] Possibly the day's highlight: G made eggs benedict with hollandaise sauce, and I made rosemary / sage hashbrowns for a mid-afternoon breakfast. Oh, it's a good thing to take time off!

I want to give a shout out to J, who introduced me to what the Jewish Shabbat is like -- to which our day of rest owes at least some intellectual debt. ...And hey, while I'm at it: Happy Rosh Hashanah!

So: it's fall already! Long-range planning:
  • H.P. Lovecraft Film Fest (Oct 1-3)
  • Portland Open Studios Tour (following two weekends?)
  • G goes to see theater show in Seattle
  • Halloween
  • my birthday (Nov 1. Ideas: lunch dates; ask for original art by my friends; give gifts rather than receive)
  • J's and my 9 year mark (travel?)
  • Thanksgiving in Colorado (if G's parents don't have other plans)
  • a cosy Xmas at home
  • New Year's (coast or no??)
  • Spring: G leads an Artist's Way group

Mid-range planning:
  • big project: review emergency / legal plans
  • big project: streamline computer systems
  • big project: set up the office room
  • me: reengage HPL movie project, in a more sustainable / less kamikaze fashion
  • me: revisit the youthlib.com project
  • me & G: do prep work for Artist's Way in Spring (incl. streamlining / embellishing studio)
  • me & Carl: do regular writing dates
  • group activity: Thursday movie outings (alt: video viewings if nothing good's showing?)

Weekly template: (very tentative)
  • Monday: G with Michaelmas; Sven @ Crisis Line?
  • Tuesday: Luxury Day
  • Wednesday: "Write Now" group at Palio's; writing with Carl?
  • Thursday: Movie Night out
  • Friday: Studio Day
  • Weekend: reserved for social engagements

There's also going to be a template for what cleaning gets done on which day of the week. Currently G is doing bathrooms on Monday, and I'm doing recycling on Sundays. Grocery-shopping is probably Thursdays (daytime) @ New Seasons on Division. The cleaning regimen will likely develop as I read more of "Home Comforts".

And of course, there's a daily template... But I'll save that for another time.
