Went to see "THX-1138" at Lloyd Cinemas with G & Leopoldo last night. All in all, I think the editing that Lucas did on this one improved the film. It's easier to follow this time around. The first fourth of the movie is harder-hitting than I recall it. That third fourth of the movie, though, in the land of white, remains the least compelling part of the film. [Very like a stage play, actually; like a play in a black box with no set -- only inverted.] ...SEN's story was also less intelligible than it should have been.
Went to see "Hero" on Monday with G & Michaelmas. There are a lot of good things to say about it. --But one can't help but compare it to "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", which I feel was more compelling in a number of ways. The thing that "Hero" most shone on: color. It goes through distinct color schemes: red, yellow, blue, white, green, black. Visually stunning. And (you knew I was going to say this) it wins the Best Use of "Shift Hue" Award: for the scene where the forest of yellow leaves turns red.
Next Thursday there are plans to go see "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow". Story-wise, I expect it to suuuuck. But it should have pretty robots. So far it looks like we've got mph, Leopoldo, and Michaelmas in (in addition to G and I). Carl?
Wednesday night G & I rejoined the "Write Now" (for lack of a better moniker) stream-of-consciousness writing group at Palio. Carl joined us for the first time. It was a good night for writing -- "why I write", "September", and "inherent dangers" were our prompts... Which, for once, got a little emotion out of my pen.
Afterwards, plans were made with Carl to rekindle our regular writing get-togethers at the Butte. Next Wednesday at 9am. A walk will be involved. Other details to be determined.
Oh, before I forget: JoAnne, the writing group's leader, said the nicest things about G & I. "You guys are the best! With you, I know you could just keep going!" ...Thank! *blush* [Secretly, I suspect part of our fairy glamour is that we're consistent in our attendance, and G is good about emailing ahead if we won't be able to make it.]
After writing group, G & I went to Pix for "make your own dessert" night. It was our "Pix-iversary"! We both went for the "black box" surprise combo this time. Me, I dubbed what I created from my bits and pieces the "pan-fried sugar oyster". Yummmm!
Last night, after THX, we dropped by Pix again -- this time for the icecream. "Port-soaked figs + goat cheese" and "lavender + candied lemon" were the two cones we settled upon and shared back and forth. I say again: Yummmm!
Wednesday day, I took the 5 drawer file cabinet I purchased for PWCL over to the site, and moved it in. I've begun transfering files into it. To my dismay, I discover that there are a lot of hanging files whose contents have nothing to do with their label tabs. Looks like this project will be ongoing for a while longer. ...I may make Mondays my PWCL volunteering days. (But I'd also kind of like to work on this project at a faster pace than that, and just get it done.)
Today is G's and my Studio Day once again. She has a wedding card to do. I may re-engage the HPL film project. Other things to do, however: putting up the paper star lights I've gifted G, and finally (yes, finally) transfering the contents of my PowerMac 6500 over to the G4. ...I'm also tempted to stick with small projects for a while, before I get back into something mammoth. [i.e., I had a thought about setting up an experiment in time-lapse photography for tonight's sunset.]
MM called and left a message on Wednesday. Need to call back today, sometime afternoon (he's a late sleeper). ...New friend from Burning Man.
